Cosmetic clays like bentonite and kaolin are naturally absorbent powders that make a great weekly mask. Bentonite is stronger (best for oily skin); kaolin is gentler (good for normal/dry or sensitive skin). The whole thing comes together in a couple of minutes.
Base recipe
- 1 tbsp cosmetic clay (bentonite or kaolin)
- 1–2 tsp liquid: water, floral hydrosol, or diluted apple cider vinegar
- Optional add-in (½ tsp): honey, aloe vera gel, or a drop of jojoba oil
Equipment
Use a non-metal bowl and spoon (glass, ceramic or plastic). Bentonite clay in particular is traditionally mixed without metal utensils.
How to make & apply
- Put the clay in your bowl. Add the liquid a little at a time, stirring, until you get a smooth, spreadable paste — not too runny, not too stiff.
- Stir in an optional add-in if using (honey for a little slip, aloe to soften, a drop of oil for dry skin).
- Patch-test: dab a little on your inner forearm and wait 15 minutes to check for irritation, especially if using vinegar.
- Apply an even layer to clean, damp skin with clean fingers or a brush, avoiding the eyes and lips.
- Leave on 5–10 minutes. Don't let it fully dry and crack — that can leave skin tight and irritated. Rinse off with warm water while it's still slightly tacky.
- Pat dry and follow with your usual moisturizer. Use once a week at most (less if your skin is dry or sensitive).
🌿 Don't let it crack-dry
That super-tight, cracked-desert look isn't the goal — it's just the mask pulling moisture from your skin. Rinse while the mask is still a little damp for the freshest feel without the tightness.
