This balm is essentially a scented salve: a firm oil-and-wax base carrying a small amount of aromatic essential oils. The beeswax sets it solid so it melts on contact with warm skin. Getting the essential-oil amount right matters — more is not better.
Ingredients
- ½ cup (120 ml) coconut oil (or olive/almond oil)
- 2 tbsp beeswax pastilles (more for a firmer balm)
- 15 drops eucalyptus essential oil
- 10 drops peppermint essential oil
- 5 drops rosemary essential oil
- A clean 4 oz tin or glass jar
This makes roughly a 2–3% essential-oil dilution — a sensible level for an adult body balm. For older children, halve the essential oils.
How to make
- Put the coconut oil and beeswax in a heatproof bowl set over a pot of simmering water (double boiler). Warm gently, stirring, until fully melted and clear.
- Take it off the heat and let it cool for a minute or two (still liquid but not piping hot — high heat degrades essential oils).
- Stir in the eucalyptus, peppermint and rosemary essential oils and mix well.
- Pour into your clean tin or jar and leave undisturbed to set (about 30–60 minutes, or 15 in the fridge).
- To use: rub a small amount onto the chest, back or the soles of the feet (then socks). Adults and older children only. Wash hands after and keep away from eyes.
🌡️ Adjust the firmness
Want it firmer (a solid balm) or softer (a spreadable salve)? More beeswax = firmer, less = softer. Test by dropping a little of the melted mix onto a cold spoon — it sets in seconds so you can tweak before pouring.
